Shanidar Park sits within Erbil's built-up centre, a community park organised around a central lake with a small cable car giving riders a short overhead loop of the grounds. Walking and cycling paths wind between lawns, restaurants, and cafés serving local food, and a dedicated gallery hall — built in the shape of a cave — hosts rotating art exhibitions.
The park takes its name from Shanidar Cave, the Zagros mountain site famous for its Neanderthal-era archaeological finds; the cave itself lies well outside Erbil in the mountains and isn't part of this city park — the gallery hall is a themed nod to it, not the actual site. As an in-town green space, it's a straightforward evening add-on to a citadel or bazaar day rather than a destination on its own.
Highlights
- Central lake with a small cable car loop over the park
- Cave-shaped gallery hall hosting rotating local art exhibitions
- Walking and cycling paths, restaurants, and family play areas
Practical notes
Free public park; the cable car ride is paid separately at the kiosk. Busiest in the evening, especially on weekends.
