Shaqlawa sits at 1,066 metres above sea level between Safeen and Sork mountains, about 50 km northeast of Erbil, and has functioned as a hill station since at least the mid-20th century, when its cool mountain air first drew regular summer visitors from the hot lowland plains. The town's population today is around 25,000, with a historic Kurdish majority alongside a longstanding Assyrian Christian community.

Modern Shaqlawa is a straightforward, unpretentious mountain town: tree-lined streets, honey and produce stalls, and restaurants built to take advantage of the cooler air and views back over the valley. The nearby Bekhal waterfall is a popular half-day add-on. It's a comfortable overnight base for exploring further into the Erbil Governorate's mountain districts, and noticeably cooler than the city even at the height of summer.

Highlights

  • 1,066 m elevation — noticeably cooler than Erbil city year-round
  • Historic hill-station town with a longstanding Assyrian Christian community
  • Bekhal waterfall nearby for a half-day add-on
  • Known regionally for honey and mountain produce

Practical notes

Free to walk around; individual restaurants and honey stalls set their own prices. Very busy on Fridays and public holidays in summer — weekday visits are quieter.
