Sulav clings to the wooded mountainside just below Amadiya's plateau, looking across the Sapna valley toward the Gara range, and is fed by cold springs that give it year-round water even in the driest summers. The resort area has evolved organically over decades: families from Duhok and Amadiya built summer chalets along the valley floor, and a strip of restaurants, teahouses, and picnic facilities grew up alongside them.
The springs themselves are the main draw — clear, cold water emerging directly from the limestone, channelled into stone-lined pools and along watercourses edged with willows and poplars. The temperature here is noticeably cooler than in Duhok city even in August, making it a popular weekend destination from May through September.
There is no single entrance gate or management body — Sulav is a loose cluster of private restaurants, picnic areas, and a few guesthouses. Expect to pay for a picnic table at most venues (nominal fee). The road from Amadiya is paved and accessible to regular vehicles.
Highlights
- Crystal-clear cold springs channelled into stone pools and watercourses
- Noticeably cooler than Duhok city — a natural air conditioner in summer
- Riverside restaurants and family picnic areas under mature trees
- Base for 4WD exploration of the upper Gara valleys
