Scenic drives from Duhok

The mountain roads out of Duhok are half the trip. These are the day-drives we actually recommend — with honest notes on road surface, driving time, and where to stop on the way.

50 km · ~60 min

Duhok city centreLalish Temple

Paved throughout. From Duhok take the Mosul road south, turning off toward Sheyhan. The final 3 km into the valley is a narrower paved road; parking is at the valley entrance. Signposted from the main highway.

60 km · ~55 min

Duhok city centreDelal Bridge, Zakho

Paved dual carriageway for most of the route. The Duhok–Zakho road is the main entry corridor from Ibrahim Khalil border; it is well maintained and busy. Zakho itself is a compact city — the Delal Bridge is signed from the main roundabout.

85 km · ~90 min

Duhok city centreSulav Springs Resort

Paved throughout. Sulav sits on the main Duhok–Amadiya road at the foot of the final climb to the plateau, about 5 km before Amadiya town — most visitors stop here first, then continue up. Regular cars manage the full route year-round. Combine with an Amadiya stop for a full day.

95 km · ~95 min

Duhok city centreAkre (Aqrah)

Paved throughout. The road passes through Duhok governorate's lower farmland before entering mountain terrain. Some stretches are winding with limited passing space — take care on blind corners. Akre sits at the end of a valley; the final approach reveals the cliff-side old quarter dramatically.
