The Duhok Reservoir was formed when the Duhok Dam was completed on the Duhok River in the 1980s. The resulting lake stretches northward from the city into a valley flanked by pine-covered ridges, creating a striking contrast with the limestone cliffs above. The lakeshore road is a favourite evening promenade, with teahouses, small restaurants, and boat-hire stands operating from spring through autumn.
The dam itself is about four kilometres from the city centre, making it one of the easiest day escapes for travellers staying in Duhok. The north shore offers the widest views, and in clear weather the Zawa Mountain ridge frames the scene to the south. Water levels vary considerably between spring snowmelt (highest, deep blue) and late summer (lower, emerald green).
Swimming is not formally permitted near the dam structure, but pedal boats and small motorboats are available for hire from the jetties. The surrounding pine forest has picnic areas shaded by mature trees — a cool retreat in July and August when the lowlands are hot.
Highlights
