Zawa Mountain

Zawa is the prominent limestone ridge that closes Duhok's southern horizon. The mountain rises sharply from the city's southern edge; from the base it looks almost impassable, but a road — partly paved, partly gravel — winds to a series of viewpoints just below the ridge crest. The drive itself is part of the experience: the road climbs through pine plantations and exposed limestone outcrops, with the city spreading wider below with every switchback.

From the uppermost viewpoint, the full extent of Duhok city is laid out: the old quarter in the centre, the reservoir glinting to the north, and on clear days the distant ranges of Turkey visible on the far horizon. Sunsets are particularly dramatic from here — the city lights begin to flicker on as the sun drops behind the western ridges.

Zawa is the closest real wilderness from Duhok city and is used by local runners and hikers year-round. The ridge itself is rugged and should only be attempted with appropriate footwear. A small shrine and some military observation posts occupy the higher parts — stay on the established paths.
