The Qaysari Bazaar occupies the flat ground just south of the citadel mound, an extensive covered market first established in the early 13th century and rebuilt many times since. Narrow covered lanes hold gold and jewellery sellers, fabric and clothing shops, spice stalls, and household goods, arranged in the loosely zoned pattern typical of old Middle Eastern qaysariyyas.
The bazaar opens directly onto the fountain square at the citadel's base, so a morning spent inside naturally continues into an afternoon on the square's tea terraces watching the citadel wall change colour as the light shifts. It remains a working, everyday market for Erbil residents rather than a tourist-only attraction — prices are for locals, and haggling is normal.
Highlights
- One of the oldest working qaysariyyas in the Kurdistan Region — trading since the 13th century
- Gold, fabric, and spice sections in covered lanes
- Opens directly onto the citadel fountain square — a natural pairing with a citadel visit
Practical notes
No entrance fee — it's a working public market. Busiest in the evenings and on weekends; quieter for browsing in the morning.
